■2010年12月31日（金）01:57　 便所の水が美味い！ラジオが怖い！！
はい、ここはキャピタルウェイストランド（廃品の国の首都）。
かつてはワシントンD.C.と呼ばれたアメリカの首都です。
200年前の核戦争で静かに眠る廃墟の街と化しました。

大地のあちこちは200年経った今でも放射能が残留し、タイダルベイスン（ポトマック川の広大な入り江）の水は致命的に汚染されています。

人々は体を蝕む放射能に怯えながらも、不十分な浄化設備で漉した、まだ放射能の残る水を飲んで、なんとか生きながらえています。

ぼくもいざという時は大便器に残った茶色い汚い水で命をつなぎました。
汚染されているとはいえ、やはり「水は生命」です。
このウェイストランドにおいて、水はダイヤよりも貴重な資源なのです。


では、ベガスは？
はい。ベガスは何も無い荒野だけあって核の標的にされなかったのか、比較的無事です。
人々はのどかで便所の水は放射能ゼロ％です。

無料で、汚染されていない無尽蔵の水！！
「ひゃあ、便所の水うめえ！！」ぼくは大便器に口を付け、まるで甘露を味わうが如くその水を飲み続けました。いくら飲んでも減らない無尽蔵の清潔な水。なんという事でしょう。

そしてラジオ！
ラジオが怖いです！！

はい。
首都にもラジオ局はありました。
スリードッグさんが「スリードーーーーッグ！！首都の要塞バンカーからスリードッグがお送りするYO！！」とノリノリで60年代アメリカの曲を流してくれます。

200年前に時間の止まった廃墟で生活物資漁りをしつつ聴くスリードッグのラジオは、人間の活動の息吹を強く感じさせ、非常に和むものがありました。

時にはリスナーに野生動物に関する警告を発し、時にはサバイバルガイドブックの刊行をノリノリで伝え、彼のDJはキャピタル・ウェイストランドに住む者たちの明日への活力になっていました。


だがこのネバダ州ベガスのラジオは違います。
はい、フレンドリーな口調です。
しかし棒読みです。
ロボのように、いや死者の読むお経のように棒読みです。
「やあ、ミスターベガスだよ。お次はこの一曲。」
セリフ自体はフレンドリーなだけに、この棒読み感は余計に怖いです。

ううう、首都と違う、妙に平和な住民の雰囲気といい、水が汚染されていない事といい、なんだかベガスは異世界みたいで怖いです。こんな落ち着かない場所で果たしてぼくは生きてゆけるのでしょうか。
